Communications Manager

Salary: $75,000-85,000 annually DOE

Location: Currently remote, with San Francisco office open as an option. Hybrid remote/office likely in future.

About you

We’re searching for a creative Communications Manager with strong writing skills, media relations experience, and social marketing ability to coordinate internal and external organizational messaging to advance our advocacy and development objectives. As Communications Manager, you will help increase support for direct services, raise awareness of impact litigation, and play a central role in local and statewide legislative campaigns and coalition work. Supported by the Development Director, you’ll work closely with program teams and the Executive Director to design and implement the organization’s communications plan. Your contributions will be central to the organization achieving its bold vision for racial and economic justice.


As one of the oldest civil rights institutions on the West Coast, LCCRSF works to dismantle systems of oppression and racism and to build an equitable and just society. Formed in 1968 to bridge the legal community and the Civil Rights Movement, we’re known for advancing the rights of people of color, immigrants, refugees and low-income individuals. We also invest in legal fellows and support a network of over 1,000 active pro bono attorneys who work in solidarity with us.

Your Work

Communications Strategy and Content Development (60%)

  • Work with LCCRSF leadership and program staff to develop strategy and messaging to support advocacy goals in racial justice, immigrant rights, and economic justice.
  • Develop and implement a communications plan with well-conceived, segmented strategies to reach priority audiences effectively.
  • Develop strategic messaging on LCCRSF policy goals and campaigns.
  • Assist staff in understanding the role of communications as a key tool in civil rights work and train them to be effective spokespeople for the work. Develop and maintain excellent relations with reporters, gatekeepers and other journalists in local, state and national media.
  • Support key external stakeholders (elected officials, coalition partners, community organizers, clients, etc.) with tools and skills to understand and speak effectively on priority issues.
  • Write and place press releases, op-eds, statements and other media strategies in a timely manner with local, state and national media.
  • Maintain and expand up-to-date media lists; track press coverage of LCCRSF.

Website, Email, Social Media (20%)

  • Supervise management of the LCCRSF website, including regular page updates, generating new stories and materials, publicizing website and expanding its outreach.
  • Manage the maintenance and expansion of LCCRSF social networking channels, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
  • In collaboration with Pro Bono and Development staff, create and implement web- based donor and e-news campaigns and communications to expand awareness and increase participation of LCCRSF members, pro bono attorneys and supporters.

Other (20%)

  • Supervise the communications and development associate and potentially future communications staff; delegate tasks as appropriate.
  • Collaborate in creation and promotion of materials for special events (e.g. annual MLK Awards Dinner; quarterly Member events).

Minimum Qualifications or Equivalent Experience

  1. A minimum of 3 years of experience working in legal, civil rights, social justice and/or the public policy arena. Experience in communications campaigns involving social justice, policy advocacy, and other advocacy work strongly preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to the mission, goals and priorities of LCCRSF.
  3. Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and editing skills.
  4. Comfort and familiarity with traditional and online outlets and opportunities.
  5. Ability to think strategically and creatively and manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  6. Excellent attention to detail, accuracy and deadlines.

Salary, Benefits, Work location

This position is full-time, exempt, with a starting salary of $75-85k DOE, and reports to the Deputy and Legal Director. Full benefits package includes 100% paid medical + 80% for dependents, 403b retirement with employer match after one year, and more. Generous time off: 3 weeks’ vacation + a personal day, 12 sick days, 13+ holidays, plus Summer Short Fridays and one week Winter Break.

Our office is located on the Embarcadero in downtown San Francisco, close to many transit options. We’re currently remote with our office available for optional use. We do not yet have a target date for return to the office, but we expect to offer at minimum part-time remote. While remote, may not work outside CA for more than 30 consecutive days at a time. Employees must be fully vaccinated for in-person work.

General working hours are 9am-5pm M-F. LCCRSF is woman- and minority-led, with about 30 staff. We are flexible, family-friendly, and value health, wellness and balance.
