At the beginning, the Lawyers’ Committee was composed of a membership of lawyers who, through financial contributions and volunteer time, supported a variety of projects. Over the almost fifty years that have passed since inception, this membership model has been reconstituted. Today a core staff of attorneys and other professionals, and a cadre of volunteers, supports the day-to-day work of the committee in service to our clients. Our colleagues in the legal, social justice, corporate, and philanthropic communities now comprise the “membership” and provide an ongoing network of support for our mission and goals through pro bono assistance, issue advocacy, and financial assistance.
To celebrate these longstanding members and welcome new ones, each year we gather for the “Annual Meeting of the Membership” and host a keynote speaker to address a topic of timely significance pertaining to civil rights and the pursuit of justice.
Recent speakers have included:
- 2013 – William R. Tamayo – Regional Attorney, United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
- 2012 – Judge Marsha S. Berzon – United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
- 2011 – Lateefah Simon – former LCCR Executive Director and Board Member
- 2010 – Justice Carlos R. Moreno – Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of CA
