KPFA News: Two Thousand Newly Released Inmates Face Deportation

Last summer, the United States Sentencing Commission, an independent, bipartisan agency, unanimously voted to reduce prison sentences for non-violent drug offenders. On October 31, 2015 and throughout the following weekend, six thousand inmates were released from federal custody. Of those six thousand inmates, approximately one third are foreign born citizens, and will be transferred to the United States’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. They will face immediate deportation.
