Homeless Rights Group: LA Decision Amounts to War on Poor People
 
Amicus brief would re-criminalize Californians forced to live outdoors

SAN FRANCISCO – In response to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s filing of an amicus brief in Martin v. City of Boise late yesterday, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area (LCCR) issued this statement, attributable to Tori Larson, Equal Justice Works Fellow:

“The Boise decision gives our clients some of the breathing room they need to get back on their feet. Now the LA City Attorney is trying to take it away. Living on the streets is hard enough without the constant fear of being arrested, fined, and having your last few belongings seized. If the LA city attorney and other opponents of the Boise decision have their way, we could all be just one bounced rent check away from spending the night in jail. That’s not the California we want to live in – and we’re going to keep fighting to make sure we don’t have to.”
